The advertised payload rating difference between gas and diesel pickups is pretty much a bunch of hooey. As mentioned, the extra weight of the diesel is all on the front end. Camper weight is almost all on the rear end. Gas and diesel pickups do not have different axles and suspension, the diesel is just as capable of hauling any camper.
Personally, I'd rather have some extra front end weight. Especially when towing a trailer.
Power-wise, there's no comparison. The gas engines have nowhere near the torque of the diesels.
And yes! Exhaust brakes!!
If the cost of buying the thing in the first place isn't a deal breaker, there's NO good reason to get a gas truck for heavy work like this.
