Same as the 1970s all over again. Lots of people kicked and screamed.
Same when DEF was added to the diesels with many holding onto the old equipment.
The real change will be when it is no longer cost effective to sell gasoline & diesel. I plan to be around in 2050 to see it. Better chance of making it that far as the air gets cleaner.
