Another option is to build on a utility bed. No chance of twisting then, though like a regular pickup slide in camper it does loose a little bit of floor space - it makes up for it in stabliity and storage space, however, and I've noticed utility trucks are more common and cheaper than flatbeds or regular duallys? Thoughts? Maybe I can even incorporate the ladder rack?

True... cheap compared to some things... but not cheap to me. As I mentioned, I want to come in at about $6K (or less, but gotta be realistic) including the truck... I expect to spend about $2500 on the truck.
