I wouldn't say it's not happening. As you now have an easy button for your camper shell solution. Still a good ambitious project.
If you go this route, I'd actually shy away from the Uhaul vans or other over the road ex rentals. Especially u haul. I've never rented anything from them that wasn't an absolute clapped out pos. Their maintenance program is really a repair program, fix it after it breaks. Typically after the customer is sitting on the side of the road, then band aid it up.
