I like to put up lights on my awning as well. I also like to see stars and I'm not afraid of the dark. The lights are nice at night for gatherings or eating outside. The dimmer idea is something I'd not thought of, although mine aren't really bright.
When I'm done using the lights and want to see stars, I simply turn them off. What a silly reason to go without a nice conveneince.
