My rigs are somewhat heavier than a PUP, but I would imagine that the same rules would apply. 
If I'm in terrain where the O/D will be turning itself on and off frequently then I shut it off until I'm out of that area. That includes hills with varying grades, stretches of rolling hills and sometimes relatively flat areas where I'm driving into a strong headwind. If I'm on a long grade, the O/D has disengaged then I don't worry about it much. It will just engage again when I'm done with the grade.
