We've done both, even with our 1979 camper with manual jacks. I've done it solo quite a few times, but it's a pain. We use our truck for other things, so the camper comes on and off a lot.
If we're just camping for the weekend we will leave the camper on, but if staying in one place for more than 3 or 4 nights, then we will take it off, it's nicer to have it lower to the ground.
