Well seeing it is a 2002 I would go to Ford or a aftermarket supplier and buy a replacement part.

There may be a fusible link somewhere. I thought that era (maybe just the F150) had a recall on the cruise control.

Check your brake lights to include the 3rd one up top. A brake light out can also cause cruise control to not work in some vehicles.

Check the switch for the brake lights. It may by damaged or misaligned. Even if your brake lights are working correctly, there may be a second switch for the cruise that is stuck or being triggered all the time making the cruise react like you are stepping on the brakes and always disengaging.

I had this problem on my 2009 F250. The brake switch that works with the cruise control is a hydraulic switch that screws into the master cylinder. It kept the cruise from activating. The cruise was intermittent just before it failed permanently. New switch and cruise now works fine.

Google your model your model to see if there is a similar failure mode.

Looks like your truck falls in the range of a recall for a defective cruise control brake disconnect switch. The switch is mounted on the brake master cylinder. The issue is that a seal fails and allows brake fluid to reach the electrical components within the switch. While this is an annoyance it can lead to a fire originating at the switch itself. I have worked several of these fires. Since the switch is on the brake light circuit electrical power is always available to the switch. If I were you I would check with the local Ford dealer for more information.

I had the brake pressure switch go bad on my 02 Excursion. the switch is screwed into the master cylinder. they leak, which is the reason for the recall they came out with, with the jumper harness with a fuse. I replaced mine and it has worked great so far.

So if I am reading this correctly, I can diagnose the problem by simply disconnecting the lead to the switch. If the cruise control now functions, I have found the problem. Correct?

The recall also included a 2nd fuse near the sensor. If the recall was done, there should be some extra wires down there with an inline fuse. If the fuse blew, good chance the sensor did rupture.
