Leaning towards an 06 with the 5.9L engine. Read somewhere there were problems with the lift pumps in the '04's but were they still a problem with the '06's?Are the injectors and turbo's a big problem with the 5.9's?I bought my '07 used but with the ECM problems wife think we're jinkxed. She says buy a 1 ton so leaning towards an '06.Thanks

I believe the issue was not enough memory space to store the updated flash updates. I know once the ECM was either fixed or replaced those same people were pretty happy with the engine. Maybe instead of buying a new truck you get the issue worked on? Might save you a lot of $$$

Do not know how it has been taken care of but I thank the 06/07 5.9 is the best truck out there. I have been told by the folks at Dodge the fuel/lift pump is the same that GM uses. red

I bought my '06 new and have been fulltiming all across the country since purchase. I just replaced the OEM batteries this month. Had one fuel line crack, heater bypass hose replaced and that stupid plastic diverter door for recycled air broke. Somehow managed to break something on my clutch linkage during one trip through Idaho. That's it for maintenance. I'm at 118k miles.

Have 145K on my 2005 and its been an excellent truck. No significant problems at all.

The early common rail Dodges (03-04) used an external lift pump mounted on the driver's side of the engine (same place as the 2nd Gen) that were more prone to failure, and would interrupt fuel flow.The '04.5+ had in-tank lift pumps that are less likely to fail, and when they do the CP3 will draw fuel through them and get you home.reddwar wrote:Do not know how it has been taken care of but I thank the 06/07 5.9 is the best truck out there. I have two '06 Dodges. One had the lift pump go out at 30k miles. Had it replaced. truck has 99k on it now, and haven't had any problems since. My other Dodge has 112k on it. Hasn't had any problems with the lift pump. I think it's just a hit miss kind of deal too. The only problem that I've had was the transmission throttle control valve. Thats a common problem with the 48RE tranny,…common enough that the dealers usually keep the part in stock. It's any easy fix too. If you've never done it before, you can have it done in 30-40 mins. After the 1st time, you'll have it swapped out in about 20 mins or less. Also the steel fuel line for the #4 cylinder is known to spring a leak too. That's a DIYer job too.

82k on my 2007 5.9 with zero problems. Last week I woke it up a bit with a Superchips Flashpaq 3855 and WOW!

Our 05 5.9 Dodge has had all 6 injectors replaced now with less than 120k miles and the exhaust manifold is cracked. :M

Turbos aren't an issue with these trucks.
Injectors are hit and miss, guys running 5 micron (or better) fuel filters seems to have fewer problems.

Baldwin makes a 5 micron drop-in filter.

I had one injector go out under warranty.
And a second replaced under warranty when its performance came up a bit short on the dealer's diagnostic computer.
Have not had any issues since switching to a better fuel filter (knock on wood).

I now have near 200K and no other issues. The only issues were with the trans. The transmission is capable of handling only the stock engine. If you increase power you will without a doubt burn out the trans. How fast obviously depends on your driving style. My engine is stock but I know the truck pulled alot in its life since I know previous owner. Trans makes noise but still fully functional. When it dies I will rebuild it with midly upgraded parts.
I disagree with the "all diesels" statement. Mine is 10 years old now with 160k and no injector issues, or lift pump(external) problems. Only major cost has been a transmission rebuild at 154k,three sets of tires in 155k and a water pump for a grand total of $6200. That equates to $ 620 a year or $.04 a mile. I did not include oil,filters in this which are minor cost. JME.

Thanks all for the replies. Sounds like a pretty solid and reliable truck. We do regular maintenance on our vehicles so that's not a problem for us. Our concern is reliability especially while we are towing our fifth wheel.

I have an 07 5.9L (same as an 06) and it has been trouble free engine wise.

I have been told by various service people that the '06 5.9 Dodge was their best truck so far.

No issues at all with mine, but I take care of it. Oil changes per book, flush trans, replace coolant, diff oil changes, ect.
