I am looking for an old post from ib516 where he gives a summary of the dodge cummins models by year in terms of reliability. searching through 14000 posts is like looking for a needle in a haystack :E

Out of 14000+ posts I thought you might have a hard time locating it too LOL. I think you listed 3rd generation 5.9s as follows and mentioned the strength and weaknesses of each. Here are the years I'm interested in

    2003–2004 250 hp
    2003–2004 HO 305 hp
    2004.5–2007 325 hp

Someone told me recently that the latest 5.9 have had major problems. This someone had to rebuild his engine at 80k.

My experience and opinion is the 2003 - 2007 5.9L Cummins is about as reliable as an engine can be. The only weaknesses I would speak to about these trucks is the front end parts, and maybe the transmission. I had to basically rebuild the front end under mine during my ownership. I got it with about 35,000 miles on it, and I can't speak to how it was treated before I got it, it was an oil field truck, but I treated it well.

I also agree that the fact that the transmission is a 4 speed is a drawback, but mine worked fine.

I would gladly own another, but I chose gas this time -- primarily for it's cold weather performance, and the fact that I don't tow as much as I used to, and I plan on downsizing the RV in a couple years.

A pooched injector can wipe out the engine quickly. The general practice over on the CumminsForum is to add a 2-micron filter inline before the injection pump.

I love my '05. I wish I had more than 4 gears though; just something to think about.
  • Well mine is one of the latest ones and it hasn't had a wrench on it ( other than maintenance). For the most part all those you listed are the same engine with little improvements to improve power.

Opps I forgot that costly and time killing water pump :W

  • IB will probably be around to help you 'sort it out':)....Truck in my sig is my 3rd Dodge/Ram 6.7 cummins and I've had zero issues with any of them and they are a towing machine....If we can help, give us an idea of what you're trying to find.
  • What do you want? My 6.7L Cummins has been great and bone stock
