I don't think it is reduced because of coil springs vs leaf springs, I believe it is reduced because of light duty coil springs to give a better ride over leaf springs. My coil springs in my Acadia allow a 1397 lb payload vs the leaf springs in my Sierra that allow 1420 lbs of payload. Of course, the Sierra is a heavier vehicle to begin with, but with a little help from my air lifts in the Acadia... there is far less 'slump' then the Sierra when I load the same weight into the rear of either vehicle.
Sure, 1" thick coils will hold tons of weight, but we aren't talking about trains here are we LOL.
