I have an 05 Cummins 5.9 with the 48RE automatic transmission. It has 107K miles and so far absolutely no transmission issues. However I have changed the fluid every 35K miles. How long will this thing last. I would just be interested in how many miles you have on your 3rd Gen truck with the 48RE and if you had transmission problems at what mileage???

I had a 3rd Gen. I think some of the Dodge/Ram transmission issues of years past can be attributed to: - People not servicing them enough (which includes band adjustment) - The ease at which you can add a huge amount of power to a 5.9L Cummins - The fact that the 48RE is based on a 727 from the 60s

Add some Motorkote or Hot Shot Secret Trans additive and the tranny will be like the Energizer Bunny.

The 48re was about as strong as they come with stock motor. The problems, as with any transmission start when someone starts to hot rod the motor. The next weak link then start to fail. At 107K miles and as,long as your trana fluid has not shown any signs of burning and the pan gaskets have been clean should easily go another 50 to 100K more.

There is no one size fits all regarding how long any transmission will last. In your case it could last for another 100k or crash next week. Some folks like yourself is easy on a transmission while others would gut the same tranny in 50k-60k miles under the same conditions. And as others have pointed out you had a good maintenance program.......others do not. Keep doing what your doing and when the 48RE starts acting up......go buy a brand new 2020 truck with all the whiz bangz gizmos :B.

Mine is not a daily driver and garage kept.......should last as long as I do!!

A little off topic, but for those who ever wished they would see an Allison behind a Cummins, here you go. Took this pic yesterday at my company's tech rodeo/trade show. I thought I got a side pic, but it didn't save for some reason. These test cells remind me of my days at Cummins.

I don't full time. It's only 2 or 3 times a year. 2000 miles in Jan 2018, 6000 miles in May 2018, and shorter fairly close trips like Myrtle Beach etc. Like I said my truck, my money. Oh yeah, my transmission.

I think I explained/understood this wrong.
I reread the shop ticket. It says "found servos in valve body blew out causing line pressure to drop and causing clutch damage, removed trans. for recondition, replaced all clutches and valve body, replaced converter, road tested for corrected problems"
so that's there story. Anyway, they "own" the transmission now, as far as I am concerned.

Good you got it fixed under warranty.... That's a shame it needed such an early repair.

I'm a bit surprised that they tore into the transmission as this repair usually ends up throwing a reman in.

Yup, takes all types. Wish you lived closer to me. I have all kinds of needed repairs and maintenance I need to do and don't have time for. I could make good use of the extra time on your hands!

Update on my Ram transmission repair. I got the truck back this past Friday. Transmission works smooth as silk. Dealer put in some kind of modulator valve, all new clutches, and new torque converter. My cost was $00.00. I am glad it got fixed now, and not when we were pulling the 5er, 1000 miles from home.
