Donating or Scrapping camper

Hey all-

I'm just looking into what options I have if I want to scrap my travel trailer. It's had some water damage (although it doesn't leak now) and has flooring and an awning that needs replaced. I am checking on donating it now, but worst case I'm wondering where/how to scrap it. I'm in the suburbs of Detroit and haven't found anywhere with a couple calls that will take it.

And if you have suggestions on best places to donate to, please advise.

Thanks

  • My folks had a 78 Prowler that had been sitting and leaking for years. We helped move some of the stuff and the moldy smell was strong and the floor was weak. It didn't have a fridge but the rest of the systems worked. I listed it as a hunters special along with all off its faults for $500. It sold in the first day and the person drove 8 hours to come get it.

How bad did you say yours was?
  • Make sure that no matter which way you go that you properly record the sale or transfer of the unit.

If someone were to get possession of the unit, take it to a remote spot and scrap out everything of value. The mess that's left could be the responsibility of the "last" (you) registered owner.

When I've had to get rid of large items, like refrigerators... (really), dishwashers, washing machines ... I'd dismantle them and put pieces in my trash dumpster each week and let the trash service haul it away. After a few weeks, it was completely gone. A camper may take longer, but it could be done!

This is certainly convenient but pretty wasteful of resources. If you take your appliance to a scrap yard, a facility that specializes in these cast-offs or give it away to a repairer. the appliance will be recycled back into the stream of goods. A landfill means it will all be buried and may lead to future problems.

The OP could sell the trailer and donate the monies to a charity of his choosing, there is no sense to break it all apart and feed it into a landfill.
  • there are people out there who would give their eye teeth for the frame to make a utility trailer with it.
  • Call the local Boy Scout Council. They may have a troop that will want it for equipment transport. Same with local high school for sport or music transport.

  • Having bought a salvaged title TT and redoing it, I would suggest trying to sell it on Craigslist. I bet you would have people interested.

    Oh no don't scrap it.

    Please donate it! :C

Rawhide is a very good 'reputable' place to donate an RV.

It will go to help troubled youth. And you will get a tax receipt.
They will pick it up and they are 'nationwide'.

Can't say enough about this organization.
