Door lock cylinder

Went camping this weekend and my wife went to unlock the door. When she pulled the key out, the entire lock cylinder came out of the handle with the key. Has this ever happened to any of you? I had to field remove the entire lock assembly to figure out how to get the cylinder back into the door handle and stay there. I was afraid the rest of the weekend that we'd end up getting locked out or unable to lock the door at all.
