DPF & engine brakes & EFI tuners.. Should I ??

In doing my research on what truck fits my situation and budget, I kept seeing DPF... Looked it up... So is it worth doing? My only actual experience with tuners is on my Harley which required it when I did mods to the engine.
So with the vast knowledge here and many if not most pulling with a diesel.

1. Why bother with the DPF kit, doesn't sound like anyone is getting much better milage or power?

2. If all you used your truck for was towing the RV (like 90% for me), is getting a EFI tuner worthwhile or is it opening a can'o'worms?

3. Engine Brakes? Going to spend significant time in the mountains

  • What year/price range are you looking at?

All 2007.5+ Cummins have an exhaust brake.

There are slight differences over the years that will yield better longevity from a DPF., fuel mileage, etc.

Are you looking at a specific brand?

The tuning is probably optional, but I wouldn't tow heavy without an exhaust brake and certainly not in the mountains.

Not true. EFI live has been around for quite some time for the duramax crowd and several years for some of the Cummins years.
  • The two most important questions I have for you:
    1. Is your truck still under warranty? Is that important to you?
    2. Do you have emissions testing for diesels in Florida?

If any of those answers is yes, I say pass on the tuning and exhaust mods.

DPF Diesel Particulate Filter. Only on diesel engines, all new trucks will have one, no option.

EFI tuner is for gasoline engines.

Engine Brakes are only used on diesel engines. Extremely effective in mountainous regions.
  • Have Efi on my last 2 diesel trucks and my current.duramax
If you do go that way find a good tuner that can sit in your truck to do it.
I Took off my dpf. And cat and got it tuned to get a turbo break and better towing power and mpg.
