Dual batteries in an older Lance?

Anyone stuff a couple small Odyssey batteries in their older Lance? I'm not sure there is room, but I'm going to go and measure one and see if I can install in the cubby.

I have a newly aquired 1989 480 with a non-deep cycle battery in it. I'm a little worried about how long it'll last with the furnace and a few lights on each night. I don't have a generator yet and I plan on mostly (if 100%) dry camping.

Thanks for any input!

  • Not sure on the older unit, but on my 2004 Lance 815, after a night of boondocking at 30* outside while maintaining 65 inside, a couple of lights for a couple of hours, and recharging a laptop while using via a 300 watt inverter, my entire night was only about 20 A/hrs. This means I could probably just squeeze two nights with a single group 29 battery.

If adding batteries for winter camping, you want them in an insulated compartment to keep them warm. When they get cold, they loose a lot of their capacity.

One option I've looked at is going AGM and making a box for them in the hall way under the counter overhang where they would be out of the way.
  • I mounted extra batteries on the truck itself (Cehvy) when we had a smaller TC. One actually fit in the eng compartment and one fit inside the frame rails.
