Back in the 60s TCs were getting popular. I lived in So Ca. I had several TCs. There were many different ways to tie them down. We were out on the CA freeways every weekend going camping. In answer to your question YES I have seen several come out of the back of PUs just as I described. Lived in SO CA 40 years driving the freeways. In fact after seeing one come out of a PU I bolted my TC through the bed and framing members using 5/8 dia bolts. Back in the 60s some of the hold downs were small brackets into the side of the bed with sheet metal screws. Many of these tore loose. The reason TCs became popular in CA was the limitation of towing TTs and 55 speed limit. Plus I am a 75 year old retired CA LEO. Saw a lot driving the highways and byways.
