My valves are a ways back from the sewer connection. There is always going to be some residual sewage in the pipe when I take the cap off. I don't think it's from the valves leaking, it just doesn't all drain out of the pipe. I put a spin on valve at the end of the pipe just ahead of the connection for the hose. Mine hasn't fallen off in 20,000 miles but you could glue it or put a wrap of Gorilla tape around it to be sure. First and best thing I ever bought for this trailer. No more surprises!

"spin on valve" ?
I've got the same issue and am wondering what to do about it. Hate to put another blade valve at the end of the pipe ...
Do an internet search for the Valterra twist on valve. It's great if one of your other valves breaks and it also comes in handy when initially setting up at a new site. You can make all your sewer connections before opening that valve, so you don't get the surprise from a few cups still in the pipe.
