e-350 vs Excursion for towing TT?

We've currently got an e-350 Super Duty passenger van (12 seats) with the 5.4 L engine. Our TT is 6,100 dry weight with a length of appr. 30 feet, but we have 6 small kids so we will need to pack some cargo, too.) We will pack as light as we can, and have some cross country trips planned over the next year. Some of them will go through mountains. But, we also have the opportunity to buy an Excursion with the 6.8 V10 engine, with only 90,000 miles. It can seat all 8 of us with room to spare for cargo, and has a greater towing capacity than the van. If you had the choice to pull a TT our size with 8 passengers would you prefer the e-350 or the excursion? What are pros and cons?

  • Our '04 X with a V10 has 180,000 something and the only thing I did was tighten the steering box so it didn't wonder. It handles our TT tongue weight of over 1000 lb without any modification.

Dodge guy, what suspension work might need done?

My 01 X needed no suspension work to tow my 30ft TT all over the sierras. I set my WD hitch up correctly and loaded the camper correctly and had no issues. Never used sway control either, rock solid.

Even had a tire blow out on the X causing 4K worth of damage to the QTR panel while towing, though that was quite a ride, trailer stayed right behind me, rock solid....

  • With the X you`ll probably lose some CCC. the V-10 X will tow that weight all day long. keep in mind you`ll have to do some suspension work (unless it`s already been done) to get it to tow without drama.

I`m towing a 35ft, 9200lb loaded TT with my X and it does great. many 2000+ mile trips through the mountains and it never misses a beat. doesn`t lose speed and I`ve passed a few diesels along the way too.

    good luck!
  • If you are going to be doing a lot of towing look for an Excursion with a diesel engine (preferably the 7.3L).
  • Is the Excursion 4WD? That would be a plus.
But, I think the Excursion would be the better choice.
  • V10 Excursion for sure. The V10 and higher towing capacity will be much more comfortable pulling a long TT of that weight. If your family fits inside comfortably, I'd go for the Excursion.
