E350: V10 Gas, or 6.0 Diesel?

We have a Ford Excursion and a family of 6. It tows well, but with all of us loaded up, gear, and gas, we are really not left with a whole lot of payload, so it limits the amount we can tow. We are looking at bumping up to an E350 to give us some more pay load, take out a couple of seats so we have less weight, and be able to tow a little more trailer. Looking at the V10 gas or a 6.0 turbo diesel. Thoughts on:
Towing mileage?
In town mileage?
Towing issues?
We will be in mountains fairly often, so I want something that can handle the elevation gains, coming off the grades, etc.
Thanks! Any advice appreciated.
  • I've owned both. V10 is up to the task if you can deal with the poor mileage, especially in the mountains. Expect 6-8 mpg. 6.0 well easily do the job, with better mileage under all circumstances. Only consider it IF you are willing to educate yourself about the well documented problems, solutions, and warning signals.
  • The van could be the answer to more passenger or secure cargo space. It is not the answer to wanting better towing performance over an excursion.
  • Without knowing more details......
First the excursion is built on the Super duty chassis, so some simple add ons to the rear suspension will get you fixed up capacity wise. (No it won't raise the rawr or gvwr but it is a reasonable mod.)
Not sure if the excursion has the 6.8, 6.0no, or 7.3 but typically van motors are detuned from truck motors so your towing capacity power wise will be down.
Last, assuming you have a 7.3 since you don't appear to know much about the other 2. Keep it and don't get a 6liter unless you plan on fixing the multiple issues.
