Thanks for all your replies to my query. I tried all the suggestions and finally went for the last one... I bit the bullet and went to the RV dealer. I am now about $65 poorer and somewhat wiser.
After the tech tweaked my adjustments he told me that it was not abnormal to have to raise the truck that high to engage the bars.
I'll pay more attention to your answers the next time I ask a question. :)
