Edmonton, AB / Opinions on honest used truck dealer please?

My wife and I want to acquire a stronger truck to pull our 5,000lb 28ft travel trailer. We do not want to buy brand new and I am fairly mechanical minded so, a truck that is as old as 8 years in age would not be a problem. We are new to Edmonton so, we thought we would ask you guys on here...for ideas on a good cheaper used truck dealer that is...honest and open. Chevrolet GMC 2500 or a Ford F 250. Also may be make the move from gas to diesel?

From E-town as well. You will most likely see that most if not all the major New dealers in their "used" inventory, won't have much or anything at all around the age you're looking at(8yrs old). As for just "used car lots", you would be better off going to an Auction... Wednesdays and weekends at Osman Auction, south side (75th street)for example. If you're mechanically minded, this may be the way to go. Have bought several trucks through the auction to use as MTC (mobile treatment centers-medical aid) and have yet to find a bad one. Problem with Edmonton... or for that matter Alberta, dealers think everyone works in the oil gas industry and make piles of cash... used trucks on new/used car lots are overpriced!

Then again, with the price of a bbl of oil and the number of layoffs... there just might be a deal out there... then again, who knows for sure.

Can help you much, "honest" and "used card dealer" are mutually exclusive.
  • I can't help you with a dealer name, but unless you are planning on buying a much heavier travel trailer or fiver I would not go to a diesel. Good used 250/2500 diesels will be much more expensive than used similar gas trucks.

If you do decide to go diesel, do a lot of research on the 2007 and later DFP equipped diesels. They can have problems if most of your driving is short trips and they don't get an opportunity to regenerate often enough.

I simply would go gas if you are not planning on a TT or Fiver over 10K lbs. Having said that, I like my Cummins equipped Ram for my 12K lb fiver. Good luck. Keith
