Electric Cord..."getting the Genie back in the bottle" - lol

My 30 amp cord is extremely difficult to get back into the storage compartment...In fact, I have started using my extension cord so I don't have pull it out. Is there a trick i'm missing in getting "the Genie back in the bottle"?
  • Great! This is what I had in mind. So, did you pull out the cord and cut it to length for the new box. Decent instructions included? Does the box seem "secured" and sturdy? I am really nervous about cutting the trailer...never done that before! lol
  • We also had the same problem, that genie doesn't like to go back in the bottle - especially in cold or cool weather. My husband got sick of fighting with it too and cut it off and used the adapter kit (This is the one he ordered and installed. http://www.makariosrv.com/park-power-detachable-power-conversion-kit-30-amp-30arvkit/) Now we have no problems at all. Its wonderful!

  • It is difficult to pull out, I can get 5-7 feet out, but I don't want to bring much more out because it is all I can do to get it back in.

It looks like the compartment is under a bunk bed...I guess I can try and remove the compartment and check it out.

I saw a 5th wheel with a plug on the external wall...I kind of like that idea...
  • I do know, when they are cold (like in the winter), they become very stiff and hard to push back in. Normally, in the Summer months, it's flexible and can be pushed back pretty easy.

I did remove the panel inside the camper (mine is directly under the refrigerator), to take a look and see what was going on. When the camper was brand new, it was difficult to push back in. Strange, the entire area under the refrigerator is a separate compartment with nothing in it except the umbilical cord. Nothing was blocking the cord, but after I put the panel back on, I never had a problem again (except in winter). Psychological???? Could be.

As stated above, take the inside panel off and see if something is blocking the flow of the cord. Does it pull OUT of the hold OK, or do you also have problems pulling it out too?
  • No, but I ended up taking the cord completely out and using a conversion kit for a detachable cord. The factory used wire nuts to connect the cord to house wiring to the breaker panel and the wire nuts vibrated loose on the neutral wire and shorted out.

As far as your situation you can remove the cover on the side of the trailer to determine why you are having a problem. How many feet do you have?
