Emergency recovery strap suggestions?

There was a post awhile ago asking, what tools do you bring? Several posters mentioned tow/recovery straps in their list. Didn't want to hijack his thread and I just learned that there is a difference between a tow strap vs a recovery strap. But recovery straps have been on my wish list for awhile now and I should get them before something happens and I need them for myself or to help someone else.

So what do I look for? I'm thinking 30' long but I've seen 2", 3", 4" and fractional sizes in between. I've seen capacities that are all over the map. I imagine I should also have a couple of D-ring/shackles to go with the strap too? Any suggestions?

  • We have a 4'' strap 30' long. My wife has the truck at the moment so I'll get the capacity later. We have two shackles, 20' of chain, 6' tree saver, we also have a 20' 3'' strap and solid bar for the the receiver like Peg Leg. Enough to help someone else help us if necessary or to help someone else.
  • I've had 2" and now also have a 3" strap. These are tow straps not recovery (Snatch) straps. Mine were rated a 20,000 and 30,000 lbs. Never had a problem where I worried about the capacity. I've used the smaller one double lining a 8,000 lb Warn winch, wrapped around a tree to hold a pulley. I use mine more for objects other than vehicles. When going to work with it I usually carry 2 pulleys, several clevis' and a solid draw bar for the receiver.
