For the last 7 years or so my tow vehicle has been diesel, so can't comment on the towing aspect, but I have compared and have years of experience running a couple somewhat underpowered Champion 2000 inverter generators. Pure gas definitely gives more power with them, and slightly longer run times. It equates to about the same power difference that I experience with 1500 feet of elevation gain. With the pure gas, I can still power my microwave with a single generator up to right around 10000 feet as opposed to around 8500 with the ethanol laced stuff (No absolutes as temperature, humidity etc change things as well). Pure gas is also much better storage wise for the seasonal, or occasional use items like lawn mowers, snow blowers, generators etc. It's a lot less likely to cause clogged jet issues with your carburetor.
As for where to get it, I've noticed that every newly built Maverick station they've built here in northern Utah lately has it on all their pumps. The handles for the good stuff are blue, it's 88 octane, and the same price as the 89 octane stuff which is the premium on most of the pumps here at the higher elevations. There are also a lot of other stations where it's available that you will find on the Web.
