I have several friends in Southafrica and I got a little understanding of their problem while I was helping them setup their solar and battery systems. Their problem is deeper than power generation, it is distribution. Their grid is not designed like ours that when you cut a leg you have several other legs to take over. In their case there is no redunduncy and they lost a big power generation plant so they can't feed power to the rest of the country.
They have been in rolling blackouts for almost 2 years now, and most homes have generators to make up for the lack of power for bare necesities.
I don't know if this makes the example better or worse, because we could potentially end up in the same situation in some regions of the country, like what is going on in some areas of California or even worse, the problem with the lack of redunduncy and backup of the power grid in Texas
