I bought 110 acres of forest land about 20 years ago. I didn't buy if for the purpose of camping on it, but to someday retire on it during the summer months when it gets too hot in Arizona. I do boondock on it and it has electicity near the property so if I wanted it, I would have it brought it.
Large tracts of agriculture land usually don't have the same property taxes as developable land. There are some maintenance issues, but it is well worth it if you find the right property. Out west there are a lot less restrictions than some other heavily populated areas. You need to know the local restrictions "before" you buy.
