exaust brake and downshifting

not really sure how exhaust brake works.
when coming down a hill should I have it in tow-haul. and with exhaust brake on, should it auto shift down or should I be doing the shifting. not even sure how to tell what gear I am in.
last, what kind of rpms should I be seeing. have seen it creep up to 2500, but mostly while towing 1800-2100 at 55 mph.
  • According to the RAM rep the exhaust brake kicks out at 1100 RPM. That's why you should ALWAYS be in tow/haul mode when pulling your trailer as NC Hauler stated. In tow/haul your truck down shifts more aggressively keeping the engine RPM's up (higher) allowing for optimum engine braking. The higher the engine RPM the BETTER your engine brake will work!

  • You have two settings for your EB...The first one is more aggressive, (orange icon), the second setting, (green icon), is more for using when you're in cruise control.

EB will usually kick out at 1000 RPM's, BUT, if you are in T/H, the truck will still be gearing down..When I tow, I ALWAYS keep truck in T/H mode with EB on aggressive (orange icon), and you should be fine.

my eb seems to kick out when get to lower RMP

Read up on your EB HERE
  • What truck?

Tow/haul will downshift when you decelerate
Exhaust Brake will slow truck down as soon as it is engaged.

I use tow/haul mode and exhaust brake when ever towing.....
    Truck & 5vr GCVW is 22,000+
In Tow/haul and exhaust brake engaged will hold speed at 45-50 mph

Sometimes I even have to disengage exhaust brake or it will slow down too much
