My brother owns a 2015 GMC 2500HD, DuraMax/Allison 4X4 with a GVWR of 10,000lbs. It CAT scaled with him, his DW and a full tank at 8000lbs. This leaves him 2000lbs remaining payload. They are interested in purchasing a FW. The units she likes run a dry pin weight of 1700-1800 lbs. I'm telling her that's too heavy for her truck and should limit the dry at 1500 lbs. I considered 150lb hitch and 25% weight of cargo for this statement. But at the same time, every day I see similar trucks towing larger FW's. I understand options affect payload. Are they exceeding GVWR without harm? How much over GVWR can he exceed without being concerned? What is the right advice to them?

This has been discussed so many times, where the 25 series trucks have a low registration GVWR of 10,000. Your 150 has about the same payload number, but a much lower RAWR. If you go over your 150 GVWR, you are soon to go over axle rating also. This is not the case on your brothers GM 2500. He will have plenty of RAWR/tire rating to handle the pin wt. If he scaled loaded truck, you need to look at scaled rear axle, say 3K for example. This would indicate he could handle about 3,200 more on rear axle, if rating is 6,200. Jerry

If he is in a state that licenses tonnage, tell him to make sure he pays for enough (like 12K) for the load he is going to haul. And to make sure he does not exceed the RGAWR. This has been beat black and blue many times. Licensed tonnage and Federal Bridge Weight Laws are what is enforced. No Pickup is going to exceed the Federal Bridge Weight Laws.Warranty "could" be an issue, however how will the vehicle manufacturer know?The RV.net weight police and doom and gloom attorneys will be along next.

Why the fascination with dry weight? The only trailers I'm aware of that are ever towed dry are coming from the factory to the dealer.

People do all sorts of crazy things with a 2500 truck. A guy on another forum tows a 41' toy hauler (19,000# GVWR, 3,500# pin weight) with a 2500.

That really depends a lot on each individual trailer model and how it is design. Carrying capacity varies a lot between models and manufactures.

Take my BH3575el with 3k of CC, the bigger Bighorns have the same GVWR and are heavier, so CC goes down as dry weight goes up. I see the same with many of the Montana models.

X2 exactly. FWIW me personally I'd tow that in a heartbeat with my Ram 2500 CTD. I know what I load which helps and my current pin is about 425 lbs heavier than the dry pin "sticker-d" weight. As a matter of fact I was 400 lbs over on our last trip last year. My normal loaded pin is 1800 lbs. I crossed a scale here in Oregon and with both grey and black mostly full I was at 2200 lbs. Right about where the OP would be. I notice zero difference. I was well under all my ratings except the GVWR.

This is all good information.

Is it safe to say his pin weight will increase by 100lbs for every 400lbs of cargo they add? Using the 25% rule of thumb. I don't know how else to calculate loaded pin weight. Full waste tanks push me way over GVWR and RAWR on my 150 and my dry pin weight is 1150lbs.

He will never reach RAWR or CGVWR. It's how much over GVWR would be acceptable.

We live and travel in Texas and do not know what the law is here.

I don't want to see them make a costly error on this and he doesn't want to damage his new truck.
