Excursion

Hello everyone ,
I am currently hauling our 34' Jayco with a 99 f350 crew 7.3powerstroke.
I am considering switching to the excursion even though it is more of a 3/4 ton truck. In the perfect world I would go for another 7.3 because it is a killer motor, however trucks are going for $4-5k more compared to the gas v-10 around me. The question is, does the v-10 really have the balls to pull 11k lbs through the hills of west Virginia , Tennessee ,etc.... ?thanks
  • There were issues with the early v-10. Spark plugs shooting out of the head. Just an FYI.
  • The V10 is put in motorhomes with 26,000 GCVWR! So the engine is rated to tow a lot of weight. . .

Ford is even putting the V10 in the class 6 F-650 too!

You will be OK with power. Keep looking for a 7.3L - but don't be afraid of the V10. It will have a much lighter curb weight, and can actually handle a heavier trailer than the 7.3L.

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • A V-10 is a decent motor but it is not a diesel.
However a V-10 with 4.30 gears will get the job done. The 4.30 gears are essential and do make a difference vs. the stock 3.73 gears
  • Well, since the tow capacity of my 4x4 V10 with the 3.73 rear end tops out at 9000#, give or take, coupled with the fact my TT dry at is 4500#, and no more than 7000# loaded, I can't say how a topped out Ex at 11K would handle. BUT, we've taken her to Yellowstone 4x from VA and always made it back no issues. The key with the V10 is to keep it tached up at 3000 to 4000 RPM on grades.

The weak links with pulling 11K (which by the way is the max tow capacity for both the 7.3 and V10) is the suspension and the gutless 4R100 tranny. Plenty has been written on fixes at the Ford Truck Enthusiasts website forum.

    Good luck.
  • I have an '04 excursion 4X4 with a V10 and 3.73 rear end. I pull about 8500 lb so I'm at about 17000 combined, which is it for the high gears. I could pull way more if it wasn't for the tongue weight which is almost 1100. The numbers are all close but all under and I have plenty enough power. If you got the low gears it would pull it easy but you might be over on the tongue weight.
