Ford Excursion 2wd

I don't have any use for a 2wd truck, but if you don't think you'll find yourself needing 4wd, you should have no problems pulling a 6,000 lb travel trailer with a Ford Excursion.

It would be more fun to watch the tach and gas gauge race in opposite directions, though, especially if that V-10 Excursion also has 4.30 gears. I'm pretty sure they were offered with 3.73 or 4.30, but perhaps not in the SUV, only in the pickup. Either way, it should pull fine, but I wouldn't be surprised if the mileage was pretty bad.

I have a a 7.3 Diesel Excursion 4wd and a V-10 Excursion 2wd. And both make a solid tow platform. Can't answer the question on towing mpg, never check it. I like the 44 gallon tank. I don't think I've used 4wd where I live. It's not used of a winter don't want the salt to destroy it use a beater truck. Zero rust on both Excursion.

We live in Alabama and don't need four wheel drive for snow. We need it for the times our wheels cannot get traction on wet slippery pavement, gravel or wet grass. In my opinion it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I also love to have an Excursion, just cannot find any good ones here

I assume you plan to get rid of your current 4WD truck for the X?
If you don't need it for snow maybe you can get away with it.
However if you are even a little adventurous you never know when you mighton wet grass or in the mud etc.
If you NEVER leave the blacktop 2WD is OK. But if you like to stray off the pavement 4WD is a nice feature.

I have not needed 4WD in the 7 years I have owned my Excursion, but it's just used for summertime RV hauling. We do venture down dirt forest service roads with it. My take on that is if I need 4WD on a certain road, I'm not going to drag my trailer down that road anyway. 4WD is great, but not a requirement in a used budget friendly vehicle for most people's camping needs.

As to towing mileage, it is pretty typical of any gas powered truck with the same weight. With our old 28' 6000 lb trailer, I got 8-9 MPG. With the current 32' 9000 lb trailer, it gets 7-8 MPG. New gas trucks might be slightly better, but not much. Mine has 4.30 gears, a definite plus for towing.

You’ll get arguments both ways and a bunch of responses that don’t even relate to your question.
I’ll suggest that you’re from ID, you’re presumably experienced at driving, know your finance and budget and only you know exactly what you intend to do with the vehicle. I think you have all the keys to your answer.
Or in short, we could argue 10 pages of responses to ad nausem and the collective forum response would still be clear as mud.

Nothing wrong with the 2WD. The X has survived more than a decade without it.

With 4x4 you just get stuck further.

If I didn't need a 4X4 at times I wouldn't have one.

OP here I actually live in Southern Oregon now just haven't changed my location in my profile.
I know about MPG I owned an EXCURSION in a previous life.
My attitude now that I am mostly retired is that if I encounter snow on a trip I will head the other way or wait it out.
Off pavement camping is my biggest concern.
