Extended Warranty for tow vehicle?

Can anyone think of a rational reason to purchase an extended Ford warranty on a 2013 F350 6.7L 4X4. It has about 18K miles and not a hint of a scratch or oil leak. The dealer-provided Auto Check is clean (surprise surprise.) If it were a gasser I wouldn't give it a second thought, but because it's a diesel I'm a little uneasy, probably because I don't know much about diesels. Factory warranty is 36 months/36,000 bumper to bumper and 5 years/60,000 powertrain. $2200 in extended warranty would get those to 75 months/75,000 miles, doubling both months and miles for BTB. At first sniff, it doesn't make much sense, except for FoMoCo.
  • I got the extended warranty on my 6.4L (8 year 120k), and it's pretty much paid for itself. Nothing wrong with the engine just everything around it like the radiator which is expensive out of pocket. I've had both ball joints and tie rods replaced under warranty as well. There are several other items that have been covered as well, so don't just look at the engine for warranty coverage it's all the other things around it that break also.
  • I've just gone through the same thing on my '13 with 31k on it. I'll be over the 36k mark before our July vacation. After a lot of research and deliberation we kept the cash in the bank. I've never been one to by a warranty – companies sell products to make money. While there are some very expensive things that can go wrong on a modern diesel, the probability of experiencing a covered failure during the warranty period just wasn't enough to get my dollars.

The only really, really major cost problem I could see that isn't already covered under the 100k diesel engine warranty is failure of the high pressure fuel pump. And most of those I've read about (from MANY brand, not only Ford) are related to contaminated fuel. I keep my receipts for every fill-up and my auto insurance will covered damage by contaminated fuel. (I checked on it,)

Now all that is my OPINION. Perhaps I'll say I made a good choice as I past 125k or perhaps I'll regret not purchasing the coverage at some point before that. IMHO either way is a roll of the dice.

Good luck in your decision. But more important enjoy towing with that truck.
  • Do some shopping. You can get the Ford ESP 7 yr/ 100,000 mile plan for that price, or lower. I would avoid a 3rd party plan.

One repair, otherwise not covered, could be several times that.
  • I didn't buy one on my 09 6.4. As a matter of fact I've never brought one on anything and so far never would have needed one. Haven't needed my life insurance yet either. :)
  • I always buy the extended warranty, in my case it was for 100K when we bought our 2012. One major item going bad will more than pay for it. We have 54K on it now with no major problems and it runs great. But having that 46K buffer gives me some peace of mind. You know the old saw: buying insurance is a bet that both you and the insurance company hope that you'll lose. Warranties are just insurance.

On the other hand I never buy store warranties on items, they try to sell you one on just about everything these days. Those are rip offs.
