Extended warranty. What are your thoughts

We've purchased extended warranties for our Ford's. 2005 Freestyle - purchased ext warranty because of all the electronics. Took it in for an AC check. Turned out the compressor needed replaced and BTW, our transmission was failing. Both with ext warranty - $100, without the bill was a little over $4k.

Purchased an extended warranty on our 2011 F350 Ford Diesel - a sensor had to be replaced, can't remember the name. $100 - without close to $1k.

Just recently purchased a CPO - Certified Pre-Owned 2018 Escape. You can **** well bet that we purchased the extended warranty AND will renew on the F350 in June too. Diesels can be expensive for repair work and it will happen.

On the ext warranty q, wait til your warranty is almost up and then decide. Buying one early is stupid. Like buying your Easter ham in August.

1. Read the actually policy, not the sales brochure, so you know and understand what is and is not covered.
2. Buy the policy from a reputable 3rd party or better yet from the original manufacturer. Many "warranty" companies are pure scams that collect a lot of money for their policies and then quietly go out of business making your policy worthless.
3. These policies are huge profit centers for whomever is selling them, so if a dealer or other person is pressuring you to buy, understand they are looking after their wallet and not yours.
4. Understand these are insurance policies and you never buy insurance for something you can easily replace on your own. That is why you buy insurance on your house but not on your toaster.
5. Know that these policies are carefully written to exclude wear items and items that frequently fail, as they have access to the million of repair orders written to know what breaks and what doesn't.
6. Understand the reimbursement procedure. Often you must receive authorization before any repairs begin, repairs must be at an approved facility, and often an inspector must inspect any parts before they are replaced. That inspector may have 60 days or more to make an inspection.

This! You can buy a "factory" warranty from ANY Ford dealership, and it is good throughout the country. When I bought my truck back in 2008, I found a dealer in Kentucky who sold Ford factory warranties (for new trucks at least) online, and they were all legal. My local dealer almost had a heart attack when I said I could get a warranty for less than 1/2 of what he wanted. My dealer did lower the price substantially to where I was okay buying it from him.

With new vehicles, I am a believer in getting a warranty to at least cover the vehicle while you are making payments on it. It would bug the heck out of me to pay for a major repair on a vehicle I didn't even own yet!

Of course, it is amazing to find out how much is NOT covered under a "bumper-to-bumper" warranty... catchy name that is, right? Read the fine print - everything will be repaired for free (and probably even includes a rental car), except for all the stuff that won't be repaired for free, and the rental car has pages of limitations of when and if you actually get one.

Okay, enough warranty ranting.

You have a 2017 vehicle, going on 4 years old. Has it been fine so far? Is there any reason you think you need a warranty? Most of the non-factory warranties have Massive fine print, and almost don't cover anything except maybe the rear view mirror falling off.

Also, check to see if you still have original factory warranty left! You may still have coverage for a lot of parts, especially exhaust system.

If you really think you may have truck issues requiring warranty work in the future, you may want to think about buying a new truck. When you add up warranty cost, down payments, and lost time - buying an extended warranty after the fact may not make sense money-wise.

I never buy them. I’ve had my truck for 17 years, and I’ve had 2 repairs. An AC compressor, and a fuel pump.
Read up on how much they pay out in claims vs how much they bring in. They are a huge profit center. Good for them, they are in it to make money.

Ask me about my bumper to bumper plan recommended by lots of folks on RV forums.

15 K miles and only a few years owning our new RV and going full time. It is stressful enough being broke down and towed. Downtime for the DPF was three days and 5K. Warranty said it was emissions component and those are not covered.

I did get them to cover a dead inverter and a bad rear view camera monitor. So got some of my moneys worth. I bought it for peace of mind. It was not peace of mind after that event.

We bought the same policy on you 2015 RAM. Which includes a loaner or rental car during warranty service and recalls. I think it was only the second warranty I ever purchase. First warranty was for a VHS tape player decades ago. Third one was for all of our appliances in the park model here in Arizona at a very reasonable price. Appliances have short lives here in the desert summer heat.

Remember that the dealer doesn't pay that much for a warranty so you can dicker with him until he just wont go any lower. The last time I bought a auto makers warranty, they started out at $2800. I told them I'd pay $1k and after lots of going back and forth, he finally sold it to me for that price. He then told me they only pay $800 so anything over that is gravy.
BTW, it was a total waste of money - never used it.
Haven't bought one since.
