Extra battery storage?

Is there any harm in storing an unhooked, unused, extra lead acid battery in an exterior enclosed storage compartment?

I have a small truck camper, and utilize the space in front of the wheel well for the battery that is hooked up and in use. I know lead acid batteries need to be vented when they are in use; being charged and discharged. I'd like to carry a spare battery just in case, switching them out if necessary, but space is limited. An extra battery would fit nicely in one of the "wing" compartments. It's not vented, but doesn't appear to be sealed tightly to either outside or the inside of the camper. (There's a small gap between the top of the storage compartment and the bottom of a closet inside, so I feel that air could certainly exchange between the two areas.)

Would I have any concerns traveling with the extra battery stored here? Or any concerns occupying the camper with the unused battery stored here?

Thanks -- Jason

  • If your RV is pre-wired for a generator option you don't have, that typically makes an ideal location for an additional battery.
  • That's true. It would also lessen any concerns of the battery gassing, which is my primary concern with storing a battery in this compartment. The batteries that I have are marine batteries and will likely be replaced with AGM when they give up the ghost.
  • If you went with a sealed battery, like an AGM, then even if it was upside down it wouldn't leak... Pricey, tho... ST
  • Thanks. The compartment is large enough for the battery and battery box, but narrow enough where it couldn't possibly tip over.
