Extra storage for the AF990

On the AF990 (ours is an ’05 model) there is 5” from the back of the battery box to the front of the cabinet face frame which makes a useful shelf. I knocked the filler panel, below the drawers to the right of the stove, out. That leaves room for a 13 x 11.5 x 5 inch shelf.

I built a shelf from some scrap ¼ “ oak plywood and solid ¾ x 3/4 oak to fit snugly into the opening and stained it to match the cabinets.

The stain on the wood (Ipswitch Pine) matched the cabinet face frames. In the photo the drawers look a lot more yellow that they do with the eye. It actually matches quite well.
It’s held in with a single screw on either side.

Extra storage is always usable.

  • Nice woodworking and staining job! I'm thinking about a similar improvement to my 2013 AF990, and wonder if you have any tips for removal of that filler panel. Did you simply knock it in from the outside, or somehow pry it off the face frame from the inside? I've already utilized some of that storage space by mounting my solar panel/charge controller/inverter breakers and terminal blocks on a piece of plywood which hangs off of the passenger side of the battery box (if that makes sense). But it's difficult to access those items, and I've thought about removing that panel and replacing it with a hinged door that more or less matches the existing ones. That would also allow me to utilize that small space between the battery box and the oven for something. Thanks for any input!
  • Very nice and professional looking job you did. Storage space is limited in a TC but it looks like you found the answer.
  • I agree, nice job
Looks like you've already put it to good use.
  • Very professional looking. Looks OEM. You can never have enough storage in a TC.
