I too find it funny how the old school dudes on here just can't wrap their heads around how capable these HDPP 1/2 ton truck are. I'm old (55) but into tech and motorized toys so recognize that things have changed a lot in the last 10 years. You don't HAVE to have a 3/4 ton (or more!) as many insist these days. Get the right tool for the job, period.
I don't doubt that they're capable trucks up to a point. The problem is they don't cost any less than an HD truck, so I just think you get a lot more truck for the same money in those models. The only trade-off I can see is that they have a stiffer ride, which doesn't bother me a bit.
A 3/4 ton or 1 ton is going to weigh considerably more as well meaning it will be able to handle the trailer even better. But if it handles it to their satisfaction who can argue that its not doing the job.

The 3/4 and 1 tons weigh a lot more, are much larger, and ride worse. Cost is a wash when you talk diesel. If you are towing 15k+ miles a year they might make sense, but for a DD and occasional towing (I tow maybe 5k a year) the 1/2 ton HDPP makes much more sense, and being within all rated limits, is the right tool for the job for me. I find very little difference in towing capability between my 18 HDPP and my previous 3/4 RAM diesel. Yeah, that diesel had torque for days, but it rode like ****. My family far prefers the 1/2 ton to ride in, and it's our go-to vehicle for almost all trips, towing or not. Momma never runs out of space for her ****.
