I too find it funny how the old school dudes on here just can't wrap their heads around how capable these HDPP 1/2 ton truck are. I'm old (55) but into tech and motorized toys so recognize that things have changed a lot in the last 10 years. You don't HAVE to have a 3/4 ton (or more!) as many insist these days. Get the right tool for the job, period.
I don't doubt that they're capable trucks up to a point. The problem is they don't cost any less than an HD truck, so I just think you get a lot more truck for the same money in those models. The only trade-off I can see is that they have a stiffer ride, which doesn't bother me a bit.
The HDPP is capable to the point that matters to me, and I'm 54, no wife or kids, just a girlfriend. I live in western Ohio, and over 600 miles from the nearest relative, so my needs my not be like yours in terms of needing tons of extra capabilities.
I don't really care for driving trucks, or SUVs for that matter, and my truck actually rides pretty nice, but it is still long, wide, tall, cumbersome compared to a car, drinks too much gas, and I don't plan on driving it much when not towing.
I just like driving a slick shifting manual transmission, and I love revving a Honda V-Tech engine.
This truck is the first truck, and first automatic transmission vehicle I had since my sophomore year in college...1984.
A big Leather, long bed, F-350 dually diesel Limited, doesn't mean anything to me, because I don't care for trucks. To me, there is such a thing as "too much truck". Such a truck is far too much than I need for safe and comfortable towing, but not capable enough for my non towing travel needs. A better truck does both, and for me, there isn't a larger truck capable enough to do it better than the HDPP.
The 3/4 ton should handle my trailer better, but a Corvette handles better than a 5.0 Mustang Track Pack, but if the Mustang meets your needs and is capable, does it really matter that the Corvette can handle better?
To me, and for my needs, there isn't anything 3/4 or 1 ton, gas or diesel, regardless of trim level worth more than the HDPP.
The HDPP is quicker, stops better, handles better, and more nimble than any 3/4 or 1 ton, and it meets my towing needs, and that is what the 1/2 ton HDPP brings to the table that a larger truck can't match.
For me, that is more truck, not less.
If a F-450 Limited dually diesel cost the same as my HDPP, I'd buy it and sell it so I can get a HDPP.
