We went back to the dealer and basically got the Ecoboost for the same price as the 5.0 without tow mirrors. I was hesitant to pull the trigger on an Eco. The test drive surprised me. I know it will tow great. I just hope it is reliable!
Kudos to you for your due diligence and research BEFORE buying. Too often we read posts about people that bought a truck and THEN started looking at the numbers... that's an expensive way to go about the process!
I had a Tundra 5.7 and LOVED that thing. Great all around truck, but you see the downfall... LOW payload. I ultimately moved up to my current 3/4 ton truck because I just didn't have enough payload with the Tundra. The Fords and GMs have done a pretty good job of stepping up the payload in half ton trucks in the past couple of years. 1900 lbs used to be 1 ton territory, now its available in a freaking half ton!
I think you will find the Ecoboost to be a great engine, and I wouldn't worry about longevity if I were you. The early early models had some growing pains with condensation in the intercooler, but Ford has had plenty of time to work out the kinks and it really looks like a fantastic option engine. Lots of power, forced induction for higher altitudes and a much lower upfront cost than the diesel engines.
I keep waiting for Ford to finally decide to offer an Ecoboost in the Superduty trucks. Enjoy your new truck!
