If you are talking about a 2018 EcoBoost, I don't think there would be a huge difference in the power. But I do think you will miss the stability of the bigger truck.

I don't consider myself the weight police (I am sure they will be here shortly), but I think a 5er is better suited to a 250/2500. A gasser in that flavor would be a better towing platform.

After you trade off your 2500 for a F150 and you don't like the lack of torque how are you going the afford another diesel? You should just keep your 2500.

you're going to have a hard time finding a F150 with enough payload for a 5th wheel's pin weight.
generally, only the lightest and shortest 5th wheels are within specs.

FYI, The maximum pin weight you will find on a 2017-2018 F150 is 1755 lbs. Ford doesn’t come right out and list max pin weight but it is 15% of the TWR of the truck regardless of available payload. So even if you have 2300 lbs of payload Ford says you can’t use that for pin or hitch weight, only truck payload. I contacted them directly and this is Ford’s explanation of how it works not mine.

You will need to find the right F-150 and FW to make it work. Mine paired up nicely but it took us over a year to find the right FW we liked. For the price you will pay for that 'right F-150' you can most likely buy an F-250 gasser.

Another voicing truck payload as an issue. If the entire family is travelling in the truck, and you have additional stuff in the bed in addition to the hitch, how much payload is still available to support pin weight?

If it's for the fiver in your signature I would say an F150 won't be a good match. A dry pin weight of 1340lbs could easily top 1800+lbs loaded plus the weight of the hitch in the bed.

Being a bunkhouse model I would assume you would be carrying the family as well? Just not enough payload in an extended/crew cab model to carry it all.

If you plan on carrying a family of five it's just not going to happen. DW an I is all the people we can carry with 2084 payload. Kids don't grow smaller as they age.

I pulled a Jayco 26.5RLS with mine for 4 yrs, 14,500 miles. Was a great combination. Many, many 6% + grades out west over the years. My F-150 has both the Max tow AND HD Payload package. Payload of 2166 lbs. New ones have a few hundred more, similarly equipped. But, I was right at max payload with just the two of us, and two dogs, and nothing else in the truck. Was also very careful to get the lightest hitch we could, and pack light. When we needed to replace due to delamination issues, all newer versions of similar fifths had gained 4-600 lbs, so I would have been way over. Had to switch to a TT. Really doubt your '02 is any lighter than my 2012 "light" was, plus the 3 extra family members...
HD Payload equipped are virtually non-existent in the used market, so you would have to order new. For that price, you could find some really, really nice gently used 250's, and maybe even 350's that can easily carry the weight.
