F150 for "light" towing

so my wife is convinced she wants to replace our aging Dakota with a new f150
we have a 3000 lb(dry) 22 ft tt, we may replace it something heavier(better construction), but no bigger, we're considering an older airstream of that size but that's a different story
suggestions? engine size, transmission options etc etc
the truck would be a moderately well equipped short box, 4 door, nothing crazy, just a well equipped daily driver as well

x2. Great MPG empty and plenty of umph for towing. The new 2018 has upped the anity abit. 325 HP and 400 lbs of TQ at 2750 rpms.
You can also get a 36 gal fuel tank if optioned right.
  • Why not just put the Dakota on steroids(like I did) and get yourself a RAM with the Hemi or new diesel. You could probably get it in the same color as the Dakota if you want.
  • If you are towing... I would always recommend the largest motor, max tow package, and max payload package. You could make due with less if you had the truck but if spending money there is no reason not to get these basics.
  • In a new F150, I'd take a hard look at the 2.7L EcoBoost
  • Midnightsadie - there is a big difference pulling a boat trailer answer a TT!

I pull a utility trailer -4300# and a TT -4500#. I don't even know the utility trailer is there and can't say the same thing about the TT.

With that said you probably won't have an issue, but I would go for the E tires an possibly air bags, if you have some leveling issues.
  • No sweat! I’d pull that tiny trailer with my 4.6 F150 and not think twice. Heck the new 3.5 Naturally Aspirated V6 would handle that with ease.

    Thanks!

  • Ford F-150 XLT 6'6" bed......
Either a 5.0 V8 or the ecoboost V-6. Auto trans.

Either will tow that trailer easily.

Only thing I would do is step up to "E" rated tires.

#1 option for me would be 4x4, as an XLT is very well equipped with the bling.
