Had an 08 and a 10 F150. Both 5.4 3.73. The 10 with the 6sp was way nicer. The interior is nicer with the seat redesign. Only issue I hated about the 10 was the 6sp for towing. You cannot lock out 5th or 6th gears which are the OD's. There is no select shift option on the 2010. It started in 2011. I towed 7300lbs and the tranny was constantly hunting unless I was on flat ground. Even then when going over an overpass it would go from 5th to 4th then once over back to 6th then to 5th. In the mtns it was always shifting up and down. Very, very annoying. I had a scan gauge and although the tranny was constantly shifting it never got any warmer. For 2010 Ford increased the size of the tranny cooler substantially over the 08, which I'm guessing is the same as the 05.
You can lockout the OD in the 05 and run 3rd gear. It will rev a bit more but at least it's not constantly hunting for a gear. If you lived in TX or FL it would be a moot point. But just rolling hills and overpasses have the 2010 hunting.
IMO it's one of Fords worst trannies. It may be tough but the lack of the ability to lockout 5th or 6th make it a joke for towing.
I know it's going to be even more money but if you could look at a lesser trimmed 2011 with the 3.5 EB it would be twice the truck of either the 05 or 10. The 5.4 is a dog behind the 4sp and the 10 tranny ruins the whole towing experience.
With all that being said if you're only towing short distances a few times a year and towing 5000lbs then the 10 would be fine. But if you put 4-5000 miles a year towing, then the 10 will get old. The 10 is definitely the better DD.
Add to that if you're hardly towing then the 05 with the warranty would be the better deal.
