F250 diesel 6.0 strange fuel gauge behavior

Strange thing happened last time I topped of and wanted to share. I had changed fuel filters, went for a drive and stopped to top off. Kept it running while I checked for leaks. Reached in and turned off the engine and topped off. When I drove off, the fuel gauge was same place before I topped off, below 1/4.

Got home and did some googling. Found out that if the ignition is on when you top of, the fuel gauge won't register correct until you run about 50 minutes. Have run maybe 30 minutes and gauge is up to about 1/2.

This is due to a feature called anti-slosh mode. Glad I found that out before I took it into the shop. Would have felt pretty foolish.

  • Every ford I have ever owned has done this.

Pretty interesting on my Lincoln to watch the range to go up instead of down.

    Very common.

Don't really follow your post. First you say you "Reached in and turned off the engine and topped off". Then you say you "Found out that if the ignition is on when you top of, the fuel gauge won't register correct until you run about 50 minutes.
So was the ignition off when you topped off? Or was it on when you topped off?

I had an '07 F350 6.0. When towing the 5er on long hot days at highway speeds and I pulled off to fill up I always left it running at idle to cool the turbo down. When I finished filling it up the gauge always showed full with the engine never stopped.
    Same for my current 2012 F350 6.7.

When I reached through the window and shut the engine off, I must have turned the key back only far enough to turn the engine off but not all the way back. I think that position is called "accessory".
  • It was that way back in 99 with my psd.

But i am with BB on the OP. :h
  • If you turn the ignition to the off position this is not an issue
  • My dads does this too. I glad you brought this up. Thanks. Now when he complains about it I can tell him.

  • Thanks for the heads up. Would have never thought to turn truck all the way off before fueling.
