f350, 6.7

I've heard that the 6.7 is a very good engine. I've also heard that this engine first appeared in pickups in 2012. And that there were some issues with that engine up until 2016. And since then, all the major problems have been solved. 1. Is all that true? 2. What is the first year pickup with the 6.7 would you buy, that you believe would be problem-free? Any other related comments appreciated.

The 6.7 was first installed in the 2011 trucks and I would recommend avoiding this year all together. The 2013 trucks overall where better trucks including better EGT sensors and DEF pumps/heaters. If I where looking to buy a used 6.7 I would start with the 2015 since they had a better exhaust brake and a little more power. My current 2012 6.7 has been great with over 180k miles and the engine hasn't been touched, but I've had to replace all the EGT sensors, AC condenser coil, passenger side bearing hub, and just recently the AC compressor to date so it hasn't been problem free nor will any truck be problem free with age and miles.
  • I have a 2012 6.7 with 125K on it with no major problems. The engine is solid but the fuel system is sensitive to water in the diesel. But so far as I know that hasn't changed unless they dropped the Bosch fuel system which is also found in other brands of trucks.
  • This is why I recommended 2015 and newer:

    2015 Model Year Changes:

The 6.7L Power Stroke underwent significant revisions for the 2015 model year, most of which contributed to or supported the increase in output from 400 hp/800 lb-ft to a maximum 440 hp/860 lb-ft.

    • Particulate matter sensor and sensor module added at the DPF outlet in order to measure filtration effectiveness.
    • Fuel pressure and fuel temperature sensors for low pressure fuel system combined into a single sensor, no longer two individual sensors.
    • EGR cooler flow redesigned, now using the high temperature cooling system (same circuit as the engine) instead of the low temperature system (which still provides cooling for the charge-air-cooler, fuel system and transmission cooler).
    • EGR inlet temperature sensor added.
    • Revised fan clutch design with additional heat sinks in order to more effectively dissipate heat, thereby improving durability.
    • IROX polymer coated lower main bearings introduced for added durability at greater performance levels.
    • Larger GT37 single variable geometry turbocharger replaces the GT32 twin compressor "DualBoost" turbo. Improved throttle response and high altitude performance. Wastegate eliminated, turbocharger produces ~30 psi at max load with an impeller speed of ~130,000 rpm.
    • New lower intake, required to match new turbocharger.
    • Manually activated, more effective exhaust braking system added, works in conjunction with new VGT.
    • Upgraded high pressure fuel pump (injection pump). New pump looks identical, but features a longer stroke.
    • Revised injector design, more efficiency nozzle design for reduced emissions and improved performance.
    • Larger crankshaft damper with more mass.
    • Strengthened cylinder head design.
    • High capacity torque converter introduced, transmission shift schedule not significantly altered.

    :):)
  • My 2015 6.7 is a BEAST.60,000 miles with hardly an issue other than a computer glitch earlier this year.. With that said, I cannot wait for the "20" I ordered to come in...
  • Own a 2012 f250 and a 2017 f350 both with the 6.7 and 0 problems.

  • I had a 12, put 100,000 miles. Traded for a 16, currently have 36,000 on it. Never had any issues with either.
