F350 with new motor

I posted a thread just under a week ago asking some questions about purchasing a F350 w/ 6.7 diesel. It turned out that was a good deal and someone scooped it before I even had a chance to see it. So I have my dealer looking around for others. He called me with an interesting option and I was looking for pros and cons. He has found an 2011 F350 Lariat/FX4. It had engine issues. They are offering to pick it up, replace the motor with a brand new 2016 6.7 and then sell it to me. It would come with their standard 90 day used vehicle warranty but the motor since brand new would have 2 yr, unlimited mileage full warranty. Just looking for thoughts on whether this is a good option if the price is right (which it is) and if there are pros and cons folks can think of. Also, are there items that I should ask that they replace at the same time as the motor since I would expect I would not have to pay labour since they are already ripping into it.

Thanks

What price are they offering it at and how many miles on the rest of the truck?

Price isn't firm yet, but the thought is that it will be in the $31-32k Canadian. Forgot to put the mileage, but the rest of the truck has about 180,000km.

I would be very surprised if indeed was a 2016 motor band new. When I had my '03 6.0, Ford replaced the motor at 32K w/a re-man. Wouldn't put a brand new one in cause they said " we can't put a brand new engine in a used truck". Needless to say, the re-man ran for 130K miles till I got rid of truck (160k). Don't know how you could verify if motor they put in is in fact a brand new never been used motor.

Thanks for the info. I have asked them to confirm that its brand new and not a rebuild. Will see what they say.

15 to 20K depending on what you want/need on it. :E The fuel system alone is over 12K now. :E
  • Putting a brand new engine in a 2011 truck ? Truck is 5 model years, close to 6 model years old. I believe new motors from the factory (where else could a new motor come from) are extremely expensive.

As other have said, I could see putting a reman engine of more likely an older engine that came from a salvage yard in a 5 -6 year old truck, but not a brand new engine from the factory. Too costly I would think to do and also what kind of profit could be made doing this ?

  • There are huge discounts on 2016 F250/350's right now. I just bought one and it had 14,800 discount. Ford is making way for the 2017's.
  • I wouldn't touch this deal with a 10 foot pole; but that's me.

Here is what I would do if I were you:

#1. Ask if this "new" engine comes with the updated valves that don't fall off into the combustion chamber.

#2. Ask if this "new" engine comes with updated glowplugs that don't fall off into the combustion chamber.

#3. Ask if this "new" engine comes with the 15+ single wheel turbo or if it comes with the fly apart 14 down turbo.

#4. Ask what happen to the old motor.

Get everything in writing. And I do mean everything! Pull an Oasis report and see what other things happened to that truck.

    Good luck.
