All the companies want bragging rights which is why Ford even goes so far as to include F-450 sales with its F-250 and F-350 trucks to boost the number of units sold each year. The F-150 is the top selling 1500 class truck but it is the Ram 2500/3500 that are the best selling in this segment and the units are greater than for Ford and GM/Chevy combined. Another trick I have seen is where Ford compares its numbers to Chevy but leaves out the GM trucks from the tally.
Not sure where you got your information from, but the 2013 data suggests otherwise (with regards to 3/4 and 1-ton trucks)

Ford is the sales leader in any individual segment across the board. Even if you combine GMC and Chevrolet sales, the only place they edge-out Ford is in the 1/2-ton line-up alone.
I'm pretty confident that this year's numbers will play out in a similar manner. I've got a list in front of me that list the top selling vehicles through December 2nd, and the F-series is, of course, the leader with 679,496 units. Chevy Silverado is trailing at 471,918, Ram comes in at 395,988, and GMC Sierra is at 188,397 units. Even if you combine the GMC and Checy sales, Ford still has the lead, and I wouldn't expect that to change in the last four weeks of the year barring an all-out stop-sale by Ford.
