Feeling kind of ripped off ?

Need some opinions. I took my new to us 07 suburban to try out a new mechanic my friend works for , and the bill came to 340. All he did was put new pads on my E brake, and cut my front rotors. He did charge 125 hr . I did not say anything to my buddy because I don't want him in the middle. So I guess if others feel this sounds about right please let me know. Thanks!!

  • The cost sounds reasonable to me. He had to pull all four wheels and if he turned the rotors he should have put new pads in the front. I would agree that turning today's thinner rotors is not the better solution - buy new rotors. I've heard costs of a complete brake job on a car can run as high as $800. My recent brake job on my F350 dually with all new pads and two front rotors was almost $400 with me doing the labor.

I think you did alright. Nothing spectacular but it seems fair.
  • A few months ago had my front rotors turned and new pads put on at the dealership for $160. Did he itemize the charges? How much was parts and how much was labor?

I always get a quote before the work is done. My regular mechanic gets my rigs when they are out of warranty. When I picked up my wife's car a few years back the invoice listed two new rotors - N/C. I asked how come there was no charge and he said he had not thought it would need them so he did include them in the quote. I offered to pay and he turned me down. Anyway, for this and many other reasons he has earned my loyalty.

    Good luck,
    Stu
  • Resurfacing rotors is a waste of money. For the same price you can buy new ones, premium ones for slightly more. There was also a study out that showed greatly decreased braking performance with turned rotors vs new.
