Fifth wheel hitch

I am currently looking to also get a fifth wheel camper. I was wondering if anyone uses the same truck with a tc and a fifth wheel and what they do to make this work
Jeff
  • Me too on the gooseneck. I turn over the ball, drop my cradle in the bed (takes about 20 minutes) and load the truck camper.

I need a cradle due to the taller cab height on my newer truck. The cradle supports the 1995 model year TC and keeps it from sliding around, in addition to giving me the clearance I need.

I'm sure there is a 5th wheel alternative as well.
  • I've run a B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch on a couple F-250s and it is a great product. It allows for a flat floor in your PU bed but can be setup for a fifth wheel with their Companion hitch add on. I've only pulled goosenecks so have no first hand experience with the fifth wheel option but if it up to their standards of quality and fit I would preddict it is a great product. I also have one of their Stow and Go three ball hitches for bumper pulls and it the best. I had a minor cosmetic concern about the 2" ball on the hitch and after asking if I did something wrong and sending a photo they sent a NEW part!

The two safety chain "U" bolt for the gooseneck are maybe 1/4" proud of the bed surface but I use a Tractor Supply horse stall mat cut in four sections and I leave a 2" gap for those link so not an issue. Being able to switch from gooseneck to TC by just releasing a pin is about as simple as it gets.

I run Firestone airbags so I milled (having a Bridgeport is an nice)a notch to clear one bag mount but other than that it was super easy on the install. Too bad you are not in Alabama as the folks at http://www.customcampercovers.com/ drilled the new hole in the bed when I switched truck for $50 buck and the are great folks and a B&W dealer.
  • I also have a 5th wheel and have Reese SS hitch but not a slider. The four "pucks" stick up about 1/4" above bed floor. I use a 1/2" sheet of the closed cell foam board in the bed. The TC just crushes the foam around the pucks and makes a smooth surface for the TC. The TC also settles into the foam a bit too, so there is no movement side to side. I have been using the same sheet of foam for a couple of years now and it hasn't deteriorated much at all.
  • Mine has a B&W. It is also flat. I bought the truck this way, but I don't have a fifth wheel.
  • On my previous truck I had the rails in the bed for a reese fifth wheel hitch, then went to a TC, but kept the fifth wheel hitch. I made a 2x4 frame with the 2x flat bridging the rails, across the front and read of the bed so the 2x were spaced ~ 16" on center (over kill). The sides were notched to fit around the rails then covered the frame with 7/16 OSB. It raised the TC about 2" from the bed but I did not need to remove the rails and I got a flat bed back. The platform could be removed when wanting to use the fifth wheel hitch

  • While I do not own a TC I do own a 5th wheel and have a removable hitch in the bed. This is what the bed looks like with the hitch removed.
  • I use a goose neck hitch so there is nothing sticking up in box. When i pull the fifth wheel i use a B&W Companion hitch.
  • My neighbor has both. He just doesn't use both at the same time. Lol.
