Filling Fresh Water Tank

Back in the 90's my trailer fresh water tank was nothing more then a hole in the side of the trailer that you would open and stick the hose in. The state parks fresh water hose at the dump station was typically a hose but without the thread attachment on the end.

This past weekend we looked at a Keystone Cougar and gone are the days of the hole. To fill this up you would have to thread a hose fitting to the trailer fill area and fill the tank.

This had me question how do you fill the trailer if you have no hose or a hose with no threaded end? I stopped at our local state park and their hoses at the dump station now have the threaded end (at least this park did)

Has anyone ever run into a problem with this set up? How do you refill water if at the site? I recall growing up getting gallon jugs of water to top off the water supply. In this traier that isn't possible (unless you have full hook up at the site)

My only solution would be to take a short garden hose and a funnel and fill the tank that way. That would be a pain though.

We looked at the Jayco next to it and they still have the old fashioned filling hole.

  • PA state parks have a fresh water filling area also in the lot you dump at. They are not close to each other but they are in the same general vicinity. The only other option is to hook up to one of the faucets in the camping loops and fill. But you may block traffic.
  • It would take a long time to fill it with a short hose and funnel. I have always been able to find a fresh water supply with a threaded bib where I could attach a hose. Most dump stations have a potable water supply close by however it usually involves driving away from the dump station. Like you, I would prefer a gravity fill like the older ones but it seems that those days are gone. Most manufacturers are going to the universal docking station with the pressure fill like you have.

Look again... you will likely find the fresh water fill on the opposite side of the trailer as the city water hookup.

    Half true....

In Ontario Provincial Parks the trailer dumping station and the potable filling station are typically in the same general area. You can not park your trailer at the dump station and reach the potable water hose, but typically you just have to drive another 50 feet or so from the dumping station to reach it. 99% of the time there is NO threaded fitting on this hose, just a floppy open hose end. There is sometimes a second valve at the bottom of the pipe stand with a standard hose thread fitting on it.

The dumping station has the identical pipe stand but clearly states it is for cleaning the dump hoses / tanks only... not the fresh water tank.
  • Fact is that some RVs don't have a gravity fill port. Those type of systems have a selector switch to either fill or use city water from a single connection. In that case you will need to connect to a pressurized system either a faucet or a homebrew container and pump.

Another option would be to draw from a container with the winterizing hose at the pump.
  • Don't use the water hose from the dump station, it's only for rinsing your sewer hose and rinse any spillage. Can't say where the fresh water fill is. Our city water connection is on road side, but our fresh water fill is on curb side
  • As mentioned, I think you were looking at the city water connection, not the fresh water tank fill-up port. I have a 2014 TT also and it has the standard fresh water tank port next to the city water connection.

  • Are you confusing the "city water connection", which is as you describe, with the "fresh water connection", which is a tank and has a fitting into which you can insert the hose (with a proper fitting)? The trailer should have both.
  • Hmm, I have a 2014 TT and you take the cap off and stick a hose in there. There is no threading. I haven't seen what you describe.
