Finally have a Maxxis issue!

For those that think that LT tires don't have issues I have a TH TT that came with 5 LT tires from the factory. All but the spare has dry rot issue's, not on the side wall but between the tread. I found it when crawling underneath to drain the Fresh water tank. I did go with LT tires for replacement.

Now do not get me wrong I do not recommend using 15-40 year old tires. I did make sure the guy that bought my XL250 know the tires were original and I would not recommend he do any highway travel with the tires.

I don't pray at the Maxxis alter either ! LOL.. but their LT bravo series has been 100% reliable for me for years.. sadly I can't say that about the Maxxis ST..

I guess I have been lucky as hell. (Knock on wood) I haven't had a blow out with either Maxxis or GY Marathon tires. This fall I will be coming up on 20K on my Maxxis. I guess I should expect a blow out.

Let me add, I do not "worship" at the alter of Maxxis. I do consider it a very good ST tire. I am also not opposed to putting LT's on my light trailer. Probably would if I could fit them without having to buy brand new wheels.

But so far my ST type tires have done well for me. Of course, I may have a blow out next weekend when I take the trailer out for the first time since parking it late last fall.

However, my ST tires are always filled to 50 psi, and I never pull at a sustained speed over 65.

The only blow out I've ever had in nearly 15 years of trailer ownership was with a Maxxis tire at 62mph. Next timne will be LT tire no matter what.

I have had so many tire failures on trailers I lost count . I have 3 commercial tow behind air compressors , 4 dual axle equipment trailers , 2 single axle ennclosed trailers AND my camping trailer . Thats a lot of tires on the road . I would go thru 5, 6, 7 trailer tires a year .I use to think thats what happens . About 7 or 8 years ago , I had a tire blow on a trailer and noticed another one going . So I grabbed some car tires I had in my shop and mounted them on and went to work. I didnt give it much thought , but 2 years later they were still on there and were bald , first time I wore out tires on a trailer before they failed . So as tires failed I replaced them with either lt tires or the heaviest passenger tire I could find . I would get flats , but blowouts stopped happening . As of now the ONLY ST tires I run are on a small utility trailer that is local only , and spares . I use my trailers , I dont have time to cover tires , down time cost me money .

So I read many forums about tires , I could not find one where people were complaining about their LT tires failing . I read how great maxxis tires are , but they are 1 out of many ST tires . I never read where a certain brand of LT was favored , just LT , so people werent pushing a specific tire , but they were recommending a product not a brand.

I learned my lesson about ST tires thru experience , Luckily I generally run local roads under 55 mph with my equipment , stop and go traffic . Blowouts were a pain , but not a disaster . Now , towing my 10K Travel trailer with the wife and kids , hundreds of miles away from home , running highway speeds ( and yes I run 65 and sometimes 75 depending on the roads) running in the hot summer . There is only 1 choice for me , That is an LT tire . I have tires capacity of a bit over 12K speed rated for 95 MPH under my trailer . Plenty of extra capacity .

Best ST tire mishap I saw . Sitting under my awning at Hershey Park Campground , BOOM something exploded . Trailer across from me and 3 rows down Blew a tire on his trailer , sitting still , unhooked and parked for a day . And his tire blew sitting still parked . And another was disformed .

I know I made a good decision with LT tires

Proper tire storage for longest tire life should include keeping the tires protected from the sun and keeping tires off damp ground.
I park my trailer on 2x12 boards when not in use. I also have white canvas covers I put over them (the canvas breaths so the tires don't stay damp, and the white color doesn't draw in the heat).
Most all tire manufacturers do not recommend and rubber dressing type product. Many can actually do more harm than good.

Three to five years is about all I get out of ST tires, LT tires and P tires. Brand hasn't made much difference down here in the Florida sun. I keep the trailer tires covered. The last set of Goodyear Marathons lasted five years before one started to bulge in the tread.
