When I had a little 4-cylinder gasoline truck and pulled a heavy boat over the mountains, I was getting single digit mileage with only a 14 gallon tank. I got used to carrying three 5-gallon gas cans so I would not run out or have to pull in to a little station where they charged outrageous prices. Prior to that truck I had a little 4-cylinder diesel with a 17 gallon tank that would always get better than 20 mpg when towing. I never worried about fuel with that truck - Unloaded, I was able safely travel 500 miles before looking for fuel.
